Co je Jádro?

Vlastnosti Linuxu určuje primárně jeho jádro (kernel). Je to komprimovaná binárka, uložená na disku, která se po restartování počítače nahraje do paměti a začne detekovat hardware, inicializovat souborový systém, odkládací prostor (swap) a další součásti nutné k běhu systému. Celý tento proces je závislý na tom, jaká podpora a rozšíření jsou v jádře zakompilovany (co všechno jádro umí). Čím více toho je, tím lépe. Na druhou stranu podpora toho, co nepotřebujeme, je zbytečná, protože kód pak zabírá paměť pro jiné programy. Jádro "šité na míru" je tedy velmi vhodné.

Moduly

Řešeni tohoto problému existuje v tzv. zaváděcích modulech (loadable modules). Jde o binárky, které se vytvářejí samostatně vedle jádra a jsou s nim úzce spojené. Výhoda spočívá v tom, ze takto vytvořené moduly se mohou kdykoliv připojit k již běžícímu jádru (tedy bez restartování počítače) a rozšířit tak jeho možnosti, případně odpojit, aby opět uvolnily paměť. Nevýhodou tohoto principu je lehce pomalejší běh příslušného modulu, což však u některých typů ovladačů nevadí. .

Zdrojový kód

Linux, tedy jádro OS vyvinul před mnoha lety finský student Linus Torvalds. Dnes se na jeho vývoji podílí stovky lidi z celého světa, ale hlavním koordinátorem vývoje a správcem oficiální verze je stále Torvalds. Existují i jiné neoficiální verze, jejímiž autory jsou mnohdy vývojáři oficiální verze. Například tzv. ac-patche (viz. dále) jsou patche s úpravami Alana Coxe. Nejjednodušším způsobem, jak zjistit poslední stabilní verzi jádra je napsat v terminálu příkaz finger @kernel.org a obdržíme např. tento výstup:

Zdrojový kód lze nalézt v několika podobách. Bud jako balíček příslušné linuxové distribuce (např. RedHat nebo Debian) v binární i zdrojové podobě nebo jako čistý tar.gz soubor (ten je obvykle nejlepší). Nejnovější informace o aktuální verzi jádra a jeho vývoji lze nalézt na www.kernel.org, zdrojové soubory pak nejlépe na ftp.kernel.org nebo mnoha mirrorech (např. na ftp.kernel.org) Od verze 1.0 došlo k jednotnému označováni kódu podle přesných pravidel, která umožňují ihned poznat, o jaky kód se jedná. Byla zavedena následující konvence:

major.minor.patchlevel

major - hlavni číslo verze
minor - vedlejší číslo verze (sude číslo - stabilní verze, liché číslo - vývojová verze)
patchlevel - číslo opravy

Verzi vašeho jádra je možné zjistit příkazem uname -a.

Vývoj jádra je velmi rychlý, takže aktualizace celého komprimovaného kódu (asi 25MB) je např. při modemovém připojení velmi zdlouhavá a neefektivní. Pokud máme kompletní verzi a chceme její další vylepšení, stačí si stáhnout tzv. patchfile. Jde o vyjádření odlišnosti nové verze od té předchází ve zdrojovém kódu pomoci programu patch (autor Larry Wall). Tyto patche je nutné aplikovat na původní kód v tom pořadí, jak byly vydány! Aplikace typu patch * ... nemusi vždy fungovat správně, protože při ní dochází k ASCII expanzi! Postup je následující:

cd /usr/src mv linux linux.old gunzip -c patchfile | patch -p0

Parametr -p0 zajisti, že program patch nebude zkracovat žádnou část souborového jména obsaženého v opravném souboru.

Kompilace nového jádra

Tedy předpokládejme, že máme stažený tar.gz archiv zdrojového kódu - např. linux-2.4.10.tar.gz. Ten je nutné rozbalit do /usr/src/linux příkazem gzip -cd linux-2.4.10.tar.gz | tar xvf -. Před každou kompilací je dobré přečíst si soubor README, který je vždy součástí každé verze jádra a obsahuje běžný návod, jak jádro zkompilovat, ale také případně důležité pokyny specifické k dané verzi.

Samotný proces kompilace se skládá z několika následujících kroku:

make config
Pomoci interaktivního kladení otázek sestavuje soubor .config o tom, co všechno chceme v jádře mít. Lze použít i další varianty - např. make menuconfig (okénkový systém využívající knihovnu ncurses) nebo make xconfig (varianta menuconfig pro X11). Další variantou je make oldconfig, který nabídne pouze ty otázky, které se vztahují k novému jádru, původní nastavení zůstane bez změny.
make dep
Vytvoří závislosti a pomocné konfigurační souboru nutné pro kompilaci.
make clean
Vymaže předchozí objektové soubory - je bezpečnější to vždy udělat!
make bzImage
Začne kompilovat nové jádro
make modules
Pokud je jádro zkompilováno s podporou modulů a některé ovladače jsou jako moduly nastaveny, je nutné je takto vytvořit.
make modules_install
Instaluje nové moduly do /lib/modules/_kernel_version_dir/.

Nové jádro je obvykle uloženo v /usr/scr/linux/arch/i386/boot/.

Lilo

Lilo je program uložený v MBR a umožňuje zavádět libovolný operační systém, tedy i jádro Linuxu. V závislosti na distribuci je nutné zkopírovat soubor s novým jádrem na příslušné místo (v RedHatu /boot), přidat do /etc/lilo.conf odkaz na nové jádro a spustit lilo. Pokud bude vše v pořádku, lilo vypíše aktuální nastavení (u přednastavené volby bude *). Teď stačí restartovat počítač a zkusit nové jádro zavést. Pokud dojde k chybě, je nutné chybu opravit a celý proces opakovat
