Criteria for admission to the Master’s Study Programmes in English at the Faculty of Informatics MU

Study from spring semester 2025

Following criteria applies for admission into master´s degree programmes accredited in the English language - Visual Informatics; Software Systems & Service Management; and Computer Systems Communication & Security. The admission procedure is for self-paying students.

Criteria for admission to the Master’s Study Programmes at the Faculty of Informatics MU 2024/2025 with beginning from spring 2025

What is necessary to fulfil for successful admission?

  • An applicant submits the online application, including required annexes and pays the application fee.
  • An applicant will successfully pass online entrance exams (January 2025) OR is entrance exams waiver.
  • An applicant will complete his/her bachelor study by December 31, 2024 at the latest.
Study application and fee

An application for study must be submitted electronically. An online application can be found at: https://is.muni.cz/application/. The application fee is 700 CZK and must be paid according to the instructions in the online application till the application deadline.

When to be an entrance exam waiver?

Applicants who have not been previously enrolled for a follow-up master's degree programme at FI MU, the entrance exam will be waived if he/she meets the following criteria.

  • Bachelor´s degree (at least another Master´s degree is also welcome) from an accredited university, including at least three full years of academic study (a minimum of 180 ECTS or equivalent) in Computer Science or closely related field with an excellent or near-excellent performance, this shall be documented by at least one of the following means:
    o study average grade B or better on the ECTS scale,
    o GPA 3.0 or higher, for a 4-point GPA,
    o GPA 4.0 or higher, for a 5-point GPA,
    o study average 2.0 or lower on the 1-4 scale,
    o percentile 75 or higher, based on evaluation of all students in the previous programme.
  • English knowledge at B2 level at least supported by any below mentioned certificate:
    o TOEFL: paper-based 563 points, internet-based 85 points;
    o IELTS: 6.5 (with no individual score below 5.5);
    o PTE Academic: 58;
    o Cambridge ESOL examinations - CAE (A or B), CFE (grade A), CPE ( A, B or C), or 180 (176) points as a minimum on the Cambridge English Scale;
    o Duolingo English Test results with the minimum score 115 points;
    o Exemption from English certificate - students who have completed their education in Canada (except Quebec), USA, UK, Ireland, New Zealand or Australia.
    o The submitted language certificates must not be older than 2 years and must be possible to verify them on the appropriate webpages.
In general, it is expected the following subjects to be part of the bachelor´s programme:
  • programming,
  • algorithms,
  • computer systems,
  • computer networks,
  • software engineering,
  • logic.
Any of the following subjects will increase your chances of admission:
  • Databases,
  • Automata,
  • Graph Theory,
  • Machine Learning or Artificial Intelligence,
  • Compilers,
  • Mathematics (Linear Algebra, Discrete Mathematics, Statistics).

This list is not exhaustive, and having these courses on your diploma does not guarantee admission. However, they are a strong indication of your admissibility. In case of doubt, create an application with all the required attachments, and the admissions committee will assess the application.

We may consider applications with non-standard qualifications where there is evidence of exceptional performance in modules relevant to the programme of study, significant relevant work experience, or relevant professional qualifications. Please contact our admission team for further details.

Which documents are required?
  • Completed online application.
  • Diploma or statement of expected graduation.
  • Diploma Supplement/Transcript of records (with detailed descriptions/syllabuses of relevant courses and used grading scale).
  • Curriculum Vitae
  • Proof of English language level.
  • Motivation letter (related to the programme of choice).
  • Own academic work/publication (e.g. bachelor, diploma thesis).
  • Copy of passport.
  • Two references on the official headed paper, one of which should be an academic reference.
  • If applicable, documentation of change of name (e.g., marriage certificate).

The documents must be in Czech, Slovak or English, and translations must be certified. Students or graduates of the Faculty of Informatics, MU do not submit the Transcript of records. Submitted documents are not sent back.

What is the application deadline?

The applications will be processed continuously after the submitting of documents and paying the application fee. Dates for application evaluation are: 15 July, 15 August, 15 September. The final deadline is 15 October 2024.

Decisions about the remission of entrance exams, invitation for entrance exams, and entrance exam results will be displayed in online application. We highly recommend to applicants from visa countries an early application submission and payment of application fee.

The general content and form of entrance examinations

The mandatory part of admission procedures is to pass entrance exams. The entrance test examines the ability of an applicant to study a naster's programme at the Faculty of Informatics successfully. It consists of questions concerning basic knowledge in computer science and mathematics.

If you do not fulfil the above requirements for admission without entrance exam, you can be admitted if you pass successfully our entrance exams. The entrance exams for admission to study from autumn 2024 will be held in an online form in June 2024.
