Basic information about internships

staze
  • Students of select study programmes at the Faculty of Informatics, Masaryk University have compulsory internships at IT companies as part of their curricula. Students of these programmes must enroll in corresponding internship courses that take place in both the autumn and the spring semesters.
  • Internships follow semesters just like regular studies, and students must complete at least half of their internship during the teaching portion of the semester when they are enrolled in the corresponding internship course. The teaching portion of the semester is approximately February through May for the spring semester and September through December for the autumn semester. Everything is governed by that semester's schedule.
  • Students look for internships on their own so that they can work from July 1st at the earliest in the autumn semester and from January 1st at the earliest in the spring semester. This means that the ideal time for companies offering internships towards students is about 3 months in advance, i.e., from October for the spring semester and from April in the autumn semester.
  • Students in the follow-up programmes must work for at minimum of 400 hours during their internships, while students in the bachelor programmes must work for a minimum of 480 hours.
  • Students must spend at least half of the total number of hours at the given workplace (i.e., 200 hours for follow-up programmes and 240 hours for bachelor programmes), while the remainder can be worked remotely. We prefer that students spend as much time as possible in a team among other employees and thus, in addition to technical experience, learn about the company culture and acquire proper work habits.
  • Students must have must have a supervisor within the company that has a university degree and at least three years of experience in a technical field. This supervisor is supposed to be a mentor who accompanies and guides the student throughout their internship, not only technically but also socially.
  • The company enters into either an employment contract with the student, or any other contract, e.g., into a student internship contract. Internships in the form of self-employment (OSVČ) are not allowed.

Required documents regarding the internships

Students need to fill out and submit the following internship documents in collaboration with their company at various points of their internship:

  • Internship Proposal – students submit this to the faculty for evaluation prior to the start of the internship, no later than 14 days before the start of the already arranged internship. This document contains the name of the company and its headquarters, the legal form of internship, a description of what the internship will involve and in which (and how large) company team it will take place.
  • Contract (DPP, FTE, HPP or other) – students must enter into a form of contract with the company. Internships in the form of self-employment (OSVČ) are not allowed.
  • Internship Acceptance Protocol – students fill this out with their supervisor a submit it no later than 14 days after the start of the internship. This document contains information on the supervisor, their educational background is, their contact information, and the student's working hours physically at the workplace to allow for possible inspections from the faculty. This documents is also signed by a representative from the company in addition to the student.
  • Internship Completion Protocol – this document is filled out towards the end of the internship. The supervisor will briefly describe the workload of the internship and also evaluate the student's approach to work, including their strengths and weaknesses. This document is signed by the company supervisor and the student.
